A Quick Thai Food Guide - How Hot Do You Like It?

chilliesA lot of people already have experience of Thai food before coming to Thailand as most western countries have many Thai restaurants serving traditional Thai dishes. The one big difference between these restaurants in the west and Thai food in Thailand is : the spiciness.

I've been to Thai restaurants in the UK and mainland Europe and most dishes that are described as "hot" are rather mild compared to Thai tastes.

Over the years, many of Pattaya's food vendors have adjusted their dishes to suit westerner's capacity to withstand chilli, so you should be OK in the bigger restaurants - just take care on the food stalls on the streets. You can say "mai peht" (followed by "kap" for a man, "kaa" for a woman) - which means "not spicy please" - quite often there will be some chilli (as many dishes really require chilli - this is a key ingredient of many dishes) but it won't cause a fire in your mouth.

Good curries to try in Thailand are kaeng keaew wan (green curry), panang (red curry) and massaman.

A favourite dish of the Thais - especially those from Issan - is som tam (papaya salad) - this is a dish that is traditionally very hot in terms of chilli, so take care if you find you're invited to try some with Thai friends.

If a Thai person says "peht mak mak!" ("very very hot!") you know to definitely avoid the dish they are eating!
