Basic Thai Phrases To Get You By

Here are some basic Thai phrases to get you by when you go on your holiday - these are really useful in terms of shopping and generally getting around.

For polite sentences, men should end a sentence with "kap", women with "kaa".

For example, "sawadee kap" is the typical way to greet people as a man, but for a woman it should be "sawadee kaa".

Even though I've told you that, the proper pronounciation would actually be "sawasdee krap", but the above phrases are more common.

"I" in Thai is "pom" for a man, "chan" for a woman.

OK, on with some other words:-

sabai dee mai kap? - how are you?
Plaza Hotel tii nai kap? - where is the Plaza Hotel
tau arai kap? - how much is it?
mai aow kap - I am not interested, thanks (useful for the beach vendors!)
ni arai kap? - what is this? (useful for markets)
nan arai kap? - what is that?
pom/chan aow ni kap - I want this
