Day Trips From Pattaya: Khao Kheow Open Zoo and Country Club

Khao Kheow Open Zoo is about a 45 minute drive up highway 7 from Pattaya central (it's been so convenient since this highway opened!). It's a good 20-25 minute drive around the zoo in your car - yes it covers a huge area. You'll find a huge array of species here - rhinos, hippos, zebras, elephants, tigers, lions. I know you're thinking "yeah....a zoo is a zoo, I could go to a zoo back home". For me, Khao Kheow is worth the trip for the scenery. Khao Kheow literally means green mountain, and you are in amongst lush green hills in this part of Thailand - if you're in Thailand during the rainy season, there are some beautiful waterfalls you can visit near Khao Kheow.

After the zoo, you could stop off for lunch at Khao Kheow Country Club which is on the way back to Pattaya. It's a golf club with an excellent restaurant (open to all, you don't need to play a round of golf). If you have time, you could play a round of golf. You don't need to be a member to play, nor have any equipment (you can hire everything). If you do want to play gold, just ensure you're not wearing jeans or dressed TOO casually (they're a bit fussy about that, but you can wear casual clothing in the restaurant).

All in all, the Khao Kheow area is a nice break from the hubbub of Pattaya - green hills and space, and perhaps a cool breeze too by a waterfall.
