How Safe is Pattaya?

walletThis is a question that is asked often by those who are thinking of holidaying in Pattaya.

In terms of crime, Pattaya is very safe for tourists. Theft is rare, but of course does happen. If you give the opportunity to someone like leaving a wallet lying around, they may take the opportunity unfortunately. But much of the time in that situation, a local would be shouting your name and running after you because you'd forgotten your wallet. That's a much more likely scenario.

As for violent crimes, this is extremely rare in Pattaya, and indeed, all of Thailand. In fact, many westerners have commented that they felt much safer in Thailand than their home country. This is because there's zero tolerance by the police for such violent crime, and such crime tends to occur in an organised fashion, not random. In that way, the innocent are protected.

Now it's not all sweetness and light. One thing to look out for is road safety. We would advise caution if you want to hire a motorcycle taxi for example. Motorcycle taxi drivers have a reputation for driving very fast, and busy roads like Pattaya's Sukhumvit Road can be very chaotic at times. It's advisable to use car taxis, songtaews and buses (for longer trips).

But overall, Pattaya is very safe for foreigners, and very welcoming.
